Day 1-2 : Ho Chi Minh City tour (B/L)
Your adventure begins in Ho Chi Minh City, AKA Saigon, Vietnam’s largest city and its economic powerhouse.
You will arrive at Tan Son Nhat Airport where your guide will meet you and escort you the short distance to your central hotel. The Majestic Hotel is a grand old colonial property overlooking the wide Saigon River, and just a few minutes’ walk from the Opera House and bustling streets full of cafés, restaurants and shops. The remainder of the day will be at leisure for you to begin your exploration.
On day two, your guide and driver will pick you up bright and early to catch the first rays of the sun and give you a chance to see Saigon waking up. The first stop will be Tao Dan Park, where locals congregate to practice their morning exercises – t’ai chi, aerobics, badminton and more. If you wander around the park to a small pagoda, you are likely to see locals performing daily prayers.
After this you will continue to a local market, where shoppers haggle over the fresh produce on offer. Take a break for breakfast, joining the locals over a bowl of Vietnam’s national dish, pho noodle soup, and finish up the morning with a café sua da in one of the city’s busiest coffee houses. A legacy of the French, coffee houses are a popular meeting spot for locals.
Later in the day your guide will lead you on a walking tour of the city’s colonial and post-colonial architecture, including the former Presidential Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the pretty French buildings that line Dong Khoi Street.
Day 3-4 : Da Lat (B/L)
Learn a little about the Vietnam War era at the Cu Chi Tunnels before flying north to the former colonial hill station of Dalat.
The Cu Chi Tunnels, some miles north of Saigon, give a fascinating (and, to most Western visitors, unfamiliar) perspective on the Vietnam War. After exploring this incredible network of tunnels, which provided cover for huge numbers of Viet Cong fighters throughout the war, you will return to Saigon and fly on to former colonial hill station of Dalat in the Central Highlands. Here you’ll be staying at the wonderful Palace Hotel, which was built in 1922 and occupies a prime site overlooking Xuan Huong Lake.
On the morning of day four you will take an orientation tour of Dalat, a region that plays host to vast flower gardens, pine forests, vineyards and what is perhaps the most interesting market in Vietnam. You’ll start the tour with the Truc Lam Monastery of Meditation – one of the largest Zen meditation study centres in Vietnam, where large numbers of nuns and monks live and worship. The journey to Truc Lam is an attraction in itself, as the monastery is reached by a scenic tram ride from a hilltop overlooking the town.
As part of the tour you’ll visit the 1932 Dalat Railway Station, the Linh Phuong Buddhist Pagoda, an organic vegetable farm, the palace of the last Emperor of Vietnam, and the fascinating Lam Dong Museum – where ancient artefacts are displayed alongside costumes and other items belonging to the region’s ethnic minorities.
If you would like fishing in Nha Trang, please mention this to us at the time of booking !
Day 5-6 : Hoi An (B/L)
Today you will leave Dalat and fly north to Danang, your gateway to the ancient port town of Hoi An.
On arrival your guide will be waiting to accompany you by private car along the coast to one of Vietnam’s most magical destinations: the ancient trading port of Hoi An. Your hotel is located on the very edge of the pedestrianised Old Town, making it a great base to begin exploring your surroundings.
A short walking tour of the Old Town on the morning of day six is designed to help you get your bearings sufficiently to make the most of your afternoon at leisure. If you prefer to use this time to relax, the pool at the resort hotel is inviting – whilst the town’s many wonderful riverside cafés offer excellent opportunities for people-watching.
For those of a more active persuasion, we suggest hiring bikes to get out into the countryside – or, alternatively, you might like to arrange a visit to the Cham Dynasty ruins at My Son, an hour’s drive from town.
Day 7-8: Hue imperial capital(B/L)
Today you’ll head onward to the imperial capital of Hue, stopping briefly in Danang to visit the Cham Museum – home to the world’s finest collection of ancient Cham sculptures.
The drive to Hue is one of the most scenic in Vietnam, whisking you over the Pass of Ocean Clouds before dropping down to the photogenic fishing village of Lang Co beyond. After checking in to your splendid art-deco hotel, La Residence, you will have the afternoon free to explore.
Hue lies along the banks of the Perfume River, which is so named for the fragrance of tropical flowers that is said to carry down the water from orchards upstream. On day eight, after a morning cyclo tour through the old town and a few hours exploring the huge Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the early 19th century, a relaxing boat ride will bring you upriver to the Thien Mu Pagoda, the tallest religious building in Vietnam.
The countryside surrounding the city is scattered with the tombs of former emperors, and you may like to use your afternoon at leisure to pay them a visit. Two of the finest are the Mausoleum of Tu Duc, and the tomb of Khai Dinh: the European-influenced resting place of the final Nguyen Emperor.
Day 9-10 : Hanoi capital (B/L)
A short flight north on day nine will take you from Vietnam’s former to its current capital, Hanoi, the nation’s cultural heartland.
Your base in Hanoi will be the magisterial Metropole Hotel, one of the oldest and most refined of Vietnam’s colonial properties. Located in the French Quarter, the hotel is close to the impressive Opera House and just a few minutes’ walk from the lovely Hoan Kiem Lake. This afternoon you’ll be free to wander the streets around your hotel and get your bearings in town.
On day 10, your local guide will take you on a morning tour of Hanoi’s attractions, including relics of both early and modern history in addition to some colonial highlights. Included in the day’s itinerary will be the ancient Temple of Literature, an 11th-century university with beautiful landscaped grounds; the bright yellow Presidential Palace, built at the turn of the 20th century; and the mausoleum and private residences of modern Vietnam’s founding father: Ho Chi Minh.
